After years of dreaming of growing the produce for their restaurants, Lenny and Sara Martinelli purchased a 10-acre farm in Lafayette, Colo. in spring 2011. They named it Three Leaf Farm, after their three children. Three Leaf Farm offers ideal growing conditions for an organic, sustainably-conscience farm: it’s fed by Coal Creek, and was previously a dairy farm, making for wonderfully fertile soil. With their six restaurants serving a wide variety of cuisine from around the world, the Martinellis have planted an array of produce, including heirloom tomatoes, all kinds of peppers, eggplant, salad greens, spinach, squash and pumpkins, broccoli, beans, fresh culinary herbs. They also plan to grow tree fruits such as apples, pears, apricots, peaches, and cherries among the wilder areas of the farm, and in the semi-wild stands, berries such as raspberries, blueberries, blackberries and strawberries. Already lush and bucolic, Three Leaf Farm will soon have edible and decorative flowers growing throughout, both of which will be used in their restaurants.
There will be many opportunities for visitors to enjoy and experience Three Leaf Farm: space for special events with in-house catering, farm-to-table dinners, wild food foraging, and tea and herb classes. Sara Martinelli, a Tea Specialist and Certified Herbalist, is planting a number of special gardens with walkways throughout: a specimen herb and medicinal garden, a perfume garden, a culinary garden, and a tea garden. Next summer, the Martinellis plan to move their Boulder Tea Company from the Boulder Tea House out to Three Leaf Farm, and offer tea tastings, classes and workshops.
